With only 47 days to go to the historic summit of the 2018 World Media Economics and Management Conference in Africa’s ‘Mother City’ of Cape Town from 6-9 May 2018, we continue to share with you, our valued delegates, some of the keynote speakers at this unmissable media business and management conference:
Professor Levi Obonyo
Levi Obonyo is an Associate Professor of Communication and Media Studies. He is also the Dean of the School of Communication at Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya. Prof Obonyo took communication studies for his undergraduate degree at Messiah College and later completed graduate work at Wheaton Graduate School, Illinois. He went to Temple University for PhD studies in Media and Communication. He started his career in print journalism, working for both newspapers and magazines prior to joining the academia where he has been for over two decades. He previously served as Chairman of the Media Council of Kenya and a member of the Council. He has served on several boards in Kenya in the past. Currently, he is a member of the Board of the Communications Authority of Kenya, a media statutory regulatory body. He is a columnist for the People newspaper, has published academic articles, served on the editorial board of several journals and co-authored Journalists and the Rule of Law. His co-authored book, The Building Blocks of Media Regulation, is currently under preparation.
15 March 2018 was the last day for registering to attend the #WMEMC2018. It was also the due date for the submission of ALL delegates’ head-and-shoulders photos and brief biographies. However, should you wish to make any last minute registrations and/or arrangements, please contact the Conference Co-ordinator urgently at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please ensure that you are on board to attend this historic media management summit.
Once you have completed the registration process, please email Heide your head-and-shoulders colour photo and a brief biography of yourself (about four paragraphs), which will be used in publishing the delegates’ profiles in the conference programme. Again, please don’t forget that today, 15 March 2018, is the deadline for registering to attend the conference.
The Conference programme will be made available soon at www.wmemc.org

Delegates are urged to please forward their travel itinerary to email@example.com should they wish to make use of the transport available to transport delegates from the Cape Town International Airport to the Lagoon Beach Hotel, the venue of the Conference, on Sunday, 6 May 2018, and returning to the Airport on Thursday, 10 May 2018. The schedule of the shuttle trips between the Airport and the Hotel and back will be made available closer to the Conference.
Water situation in Cape Town
Cape Town is in a water-scarce region and is currently in the midst of a serious drought. We need your help to conserve the precious resource. Please ‘save like a local’, and keep your water usage to under 50 litres per person per day. Please visit www.capetown.gov.za for more details. Our hotel conference hosts assure us that there will be adequate water for delegates throughout the conference, and Cape Town has just also received some most welcome rains.
Security Tips and Information
The City of Cape Town is relatively safe and friendly. However, you are advised to be cautious of your surroundings at all times and to keep all belongings locked up or away from easy access.
You will be given a conference delegate tag when you register for the WMEMC conference. The tag gives you access to the conference sessions. You also need the tag for access to the lunches, tea breaks and dinners and evening entertainment. Please ensure that you wear it at all times during the conference.
You will also be issued with drinks coupons that entitle you to three drinks for the Welcome Cocktail Reception and the closing Dinner respectively. In addition, a cash bar will be available for those who need more than three drinks at either lunch or dinner.
Dress during the conference will be smart casual with the exception of the formal closing dinner on Wednesday 9 May 2018, where delegates are expected to dress formally.
The month of May is the last month of autumn in South Africa, bordering on winter. Cape Town tends to experience some rain during this time. We strongly advise you to bring some warm clothing and an umbrella and/or raincoat just in case.
Wi-Fi will be available to delegates at all of the venues free of charge, with the details available at registration.
The full conference papers will be made available soon on the conference website at www.wmemc.org. Delegates will be required to login using a password that will be provided in order to view the papers. The password will be sent to all registered delegates. Non-delegates will not have access to the papers, which authors will be free to offer for publication in academic journals after the conference.
#WMEMC2018 registration will take place on Sunday, 6 May 2018, from 09:00 until 17:00. From 14:00-17:00 delegates are encouraged to tour scenic sites of Cape Town (optional) at own cost. At 18.30 the Conference’s Welcome Cocktail Reception will commence until late.
The summit of the WMEMC starts at 08:00 on Monday, 7 May, running until Wednesday, 9 May 2018. The conference will conclude with a closing Gala Dinner and after-dinner party on Wednesday, 9 May, from 18:30 till late.
