Security Tips and Information
We urge all delegates to please keep their mobile phones on silent during conference proceedings to minimise disruptions.
The City of Cape Town is relatively safe and friendly. However, you are advised to be cautious of your surroundings at all times and to keep all belongings locked up or away from easy access.
You will be given a conference delegate tag when you register for the WMEMC conference on Sunday, 6 May 2018. The tag gives you access to the conference sessions. You also need the tag for access to the lunches, tea breaks and dinners and evening entertainment. Please ensure that you wear it at all times during the conference.
You will also be issued with drinks coupons that entitle you to three drinks (champagne or wines) for the Welcome Cocktail Reception and the closing Dinner respectively. In addition, a cash bar will be available for those who need more than three drinks at either lunch or dinner. During lunches, you will be entitled to two drinks (a beer, cider or soft drink).
Dress during the conference will be smart casual with the exception of the formal closing dinner on Wednesday, 9 May 2018, where delegates are expected to dress formally.
The month of May is the last month of autumn in South Africa and bordering on winter. Cape Town tends to experience some rain during this time. We strongly advise you to bring some warm clothing and an umbrella and/or raincoat just in case.
Wi-Fi will be available to delegates at all of the conference venues free of charge, with the details available at registration.
#WMEMC2018 registration will take place on Sunday, 6 May 2018, from 09:00 until 17:00. From 14:00-17:00 delegates are encouraged to tour scenic sites of Cape Town (optional) at own cost. At 18.30 the Conference’s Welcome Cocktail Reception will commence at the Lagoon Hotel until late.
The summit of the WMEMC starts at 08:00 on Monday, 7 May, running until Wednesday, 9 May 2018. The conference will conclude with a closing Gala Dinner and after-dinner party on Wednesday, 9 May 2018, from 18:30 till late. A cash bar will be available for the after-dinner party, which will run until late into the night.
Kindly note the name of the transport provider, Evolution Tours. There will be a clearly marked Welcome Desk at the Cape Town International Airport with two assistants who will lead delegates to the buses. The schedule of the shuttle trips between the Airport and the Hotel and back appears below.
These are final shuttle times from either Cape Town International Airport or from the Lagoon Beach Hotel:

Reminder of the responsibilities of chairs and moderators
The responsibilities of the chairs (and of moderators of panels) of the research sessions include:
v -Briefly introducing the broad topics being discussed; briefly introducing the presenters and wrapping up the session at its end, when the chair opens up the session to the audience for a Q&A with the presenters.
v -Time-keeping so that the session does not over-run its allotted time, which would affect the next sessions.
v -Reminding presenters to speak to their research papers, and not to read their papers. Conference papers are being uploaded on the conference website and are being pass-word protected for access only by paid-up delegates. Delegates, who will be advised of the password shortly, are kindly asked to read the papers in advance of the conference; and
v – Asking delegates to identify themselves and their organizations when asking speakers questions.
We urge moderators and Chairs to please get to know who will participate in their sessions by reading the bios of these participants on the WMEMC website in advance.
Water situation in Cape Town
Cape Town is in a water-scarce region and is currently in the midst of a serious drought, although it has received some welcome rains lately. We need your help to conserve the precious resource. Please ‘save like a local’, and keep your water usage to under 50 litres per person per day. Please visit www.capetown.gov.za for more details. Our hotel conference hosts assure us that there will be adequate water for delegates throughout the conference.
